This week’s noted point:  Make it about them.

I just came back from a conference where I got to hear lots of speakers.

Unfortunately, of the many speakers I listened too, I really only learned from two.  Why only two?  All of the other speakers made it about them and not about the audience.  What do I mean?

Well, I heard one speaker tell me everything she did when she went to Africa.  It felt like the days when I had to look at every picture my aunt and uncle took from their vacation.  How does her trip to Africa, help me in my business or in my life?  It doesn’t and do you really think I paid with my time to hear about you?  I want you to tell me what I need to be better and more successful!

There are too many times, where I see people make it all about them.  I’m sorry but when I when I go to see a speech, I don’t care about your story, what I care about is the information you can give to help me.  I realize that may sound harsh, but it is the truth that nobody else is willing to tell you.

There are so many other places where I see people make it about them. This includes team meetings and sales calls.  If you want to truly be successful, stop making it about you and start making it about the person across from you.
